Introducing  MScience

MScience Is an innovative experiential education program designed to re-invigorate curiosity and connect Youth back to the exciting world of Science.  MScience does this by syncing the conversations around science with  resources of relevance to students, their families and communities with a curriculum specifically ‘tailor made’ to take advantage of the many unique natural and physical resources readily accessible within your region.

Our programendeavor’s to acknowledge the contribution that Maori perspectives make to the development of understanding in Science.  We believe that Maori have a culturally unique world-view that is authentic and important.  This

initiative aims to ignite this possibility by having more Maori at the table during discussions of consequence when it comes to Science and its implications towards us as a people.  It will be fundamental in creating the building blocks of a forward lookingAotearoa.

Our approach

We utilize an integrated ‘outdoor’ learning approach towards Science that focuses on the strands that are specified within the Level 4 Science Curriculum, those being:

  • Investigate the nature of Science

  • Living world

  • Helping students to develop knowledge and a coherent understanding of the living, physical, material and technological components of the environment

  • Providing opportunities for students to develop the attitudes on which scientific investigation depends

  • Developing students’ understanding of the evolving nature of science and technology

  • Helping students to explore issues and to make responsible decisions about the use of science and technology in the environment and

  • Nurturing scientific talent to ensure a future scientific community

  • Planet Earth and beyond and

  • The physical world

The need to make scientific disciplines more accessible and attractive to all of today’s youth has never been greater.  New Zealand is rapidly reaching the forefront of science and technology advancement and has the potential to become a rich source of scientific expertise – but - only if the system is fed with a healthy supply of passionate learners.

The New Zealand National Curriculum is a framework that provides guidance for schools in the development of their school-based curriculum.  It puts students at the centre of the learning process and places an emphasis on the development of the key competencies and social values.

Curriculum

We worked hand in hand with Rotorua Intermediate School to ensure our series of  unique fresh water based experiences that connect Maori beliefs and principles to modern ways of knowing and understanding the world around us is congruent to the Intermediate School Science curriculum.  It is an adaptable curriculum.

General Aims

We believe MScience meets the general aims of the science education in the New Zealand curriculum.
